Bee Gees musical
Steve Wynn confirmed he has entered into an agreement with brothers Barry and Robin Gibb of The Bee Gees to produce a musical based on the group’s music. The show would be similar to “Jersey Boys,” the hit musical that Adelson brought to The Palazzo earlier this year. Wynn said the treatment is being done by Bob Martin, who did “The Drowsy Chaperone,” the Broadway musical that received 13 Tony nominations, including best musical, best lead actor in a musical (Martin) and best book of a musical (Martin co-wrote it). Bee Gees stage show

Shown are Erich Bergen, Jeff Leibow, Gibb, Wynn, Eric Bates and Rick Faugno

Casino tycoon Steve Wynn is only days away from opening his new $3 billion luxury resort tower Encore on the Strip in Las Vegas, and yet, he seems to have already finished negotiations with the Bee Gees to deliver a new musical to open on its first anniversary. Now despite the fact it’s a top-secret project, Stayin’ Alive is to be a musical of the group’s life, and although it still will certainly be denied by all, Steve is masterminding a plan for it to be the major theatrical attraction at Encore to tie in with its first anniversary next December. Encore opens this Dec. 22. Last week when the Gibb family was in Vegas for the marriage of Sam Gibb (daughter of Maurice and Yvonne Gibb) Steve took lead singer Barry Gibb and his wife of 38 years, Linda, to see Jersey Boys at the Palazzo just opposite his own towers. They went backstage afterwards to meet the cast, but at that point the Bee Gees musical was still wrapped in confidential privacy. Following the meetings with Steve Wynn, Barry flew back to Miami excitedly telling friends that the Stayin’ Alive musical deal was on for next December. No word as to whether the Bee Gees themselves will be seen in the show, but they will certainly be heard! There’s no official comment yet from Steve Wynn, but it seems the musical of their life story has been written and is planned for production next year. “Stayin Alive”
U.S. doctors have found that the Bee Gees 1977 hit “Stayin’ Alive” provides an ideal beat to follow while performing chest compressions as part of CPR on a heart attack victim. The American Heart Association calls for chest compressions to be given at a rate of 100 per minute in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). “Stayin’ Alive” almost perfectly matches that, with 103 beats per minute. ( Stayin’ alive, Stayin’ alive, Ha…ah…ah…ah) this part is exactly 100 beats per minute Stayin’ a-li-ive This tip helps rescuers keep the proper rate while doing CPR. Going too slow doesn’t generate enough blood flow, and going too fast doesn’t allow the heart to fill properly between compressions. In a small study headed by Dr. David Matlock of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, listening to “Stayin’ Alive” helped 15 doctors and medical students to perform chest compressions on dummies at the proper speed. Humming along with the Bee Gees is one way to stay on track. http://news.yahoo.com  www.cnn.com

Barry sings with Jamie Jo
Jamie Jo’s debut single, “U Turn Me On,” is pop confection at its tastiest. It also features an instantly recognizable guest star: Barry Gibb, who lent his talents and inimitable voice. Jamie Jo was fortunate to be surrounded by superb pop tunes from childhood. Literally, in fact. Her parents were friends with a number of prolific musicians, including the Bee Gees and Frank Sinatra. (Jamie Jo Harris’s parents are Mel Harris and Francine Harris).

Jamie Jo explored and immersed herself in many creative fields throughout her youth, travelling at length in the process. At age seventeen she embarked overseas for a rigorous European art tour of the masters. Back home in the States, she was exposed to contemporary American art gurus and figureheads. She went on to study photography at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and majored in Art History at the University of Miami. In 1996, she slipped some songs to family friend Barry Gibb and started working with seasoned producer/studio engineer/musician, John Merchant. One of those early tunes was employed as a commercial jingle for major Florida department store chain, Burdines. The upbeat “U Turn Me On” is simply about dancing with an amazing partner Read more about Jamie Jo and listen to the new song at: www.jamiejo.com   http://dancemusic.about.com   http://profile.myspace.com

Robins’ support to academy recordings
Robin has pledged his support to Academy Recordings, a new digital only label created by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. Academy Recordings www.britishacademy.com will enable its members to release recordings under a license agreement with The Orchard, one of the world’s leading music distributors and marketers. Robin said, “This is a landmark opportunity for Artists and Writers. Unfettered by the demands of the traditional album cycle and label system, I can release any musical idea I choose, in a dialogue with my fans, and actually get paid. This is a serious contender for paving the way of an entirely new approach towards making, marketing and selling music.” Robin will contribute a track to the label’s debut release, alongside other Academy Fellows and Ivor Novello Award winning Academy members. This debut release will feature a multi-genre combination of newly recorded tracks and previously unreleased archive recordings. Read more at: www.robingibb.com and: www.businesswire.com:80

Album Releases
The “Odessa” re-issue is available from January 12th. U.K, January 13, USA (3 box set). The reissue (originally released in February 1969) marks the 40th anniversary of the double album. It will be a three-disc Deluxe Edition that features the album’s original stereo and mono mixes, along with a third disc of unreleased demos, sketches and alternate mixes that reveal the album’s creative process. The CD version reproduces the original packaging, which featured a red-flocked cover. The 17-song collection features a rich mix of styles from songs like the acoustic-based “Marley Purt Drive” to Bill Shepherd’s majestic orchestral arrangements on and the title song “Odessa (City On The Black Sea),” which is built around the interplay between Maurice’s flamenco guitar and cello from Paul Buckmaster (who went on to find fame as Elton John’s arranger). The third disc contains 22 unreleased tracks, including demos or alternate takes for all but one song from the original album. The disc also features two songs from the Odessa sessions not included on the original album: “Pity” and: “Nobody’s Someone”, as well as a 30-second spot promoting the album. The un-issued tracks present two versions of several songs, including a demo for “Melody Fair” with a completely different arrangement, as well as an alternate take recorded a few days later that reveals some of Maurice’s great Mellotron work obscured by strings in the final mix. Perhaps the most revealing is the demo for “Odessa (City On The Sea).” During the album’s sessions, the brothers experimented lyrically with elements of the song’s mythology: changing the year from 1866 to 1899; and the name and nationality of the vessel from the Dutch ship Onstrauss to the British ship Veronica. Originally picked as the first single, it was dropped in favor of “First Of May.” Also read: www.billboard.com   www.vintageguitar.com

Robin did quite some promotion work around the 30th anniversary of SNF and mentioned in recent interviews about the film and his future plans with brother Barry: “It’s not that I can’t watch it, it’s just that I’m restless.” Robin admitted he had walked out of the US premiere of SNF in 1977 after just 30 minutes. “Barry and I cannot recreate the Bee Gees sound, that was the three of us” “we are both doing different things, we may come together to write in the future but for now we have our own things to do”. The band have been inactive since the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003, but Robin hinted that he may reunite on stage with third brother Barry next year, when a musical based on their career launches. “We are closer to that than we’ve ever been,” he said. “It’s definitely maybe.” Also read: http://news.bbc.co.uk

Robin interviews
Robin told the BBC he and brother Barry may return to the stage as The Bee Gees, five years after their brother and bandmate Maurice died. Many news papers and TV programs mentioned the news. It would be great and there’s nothing we would love to happen more in the future but still we have to see what comes of it. http://news.bbc.co.uk He also gives his verdict on the current pop scene and discusses why he wants to honour his war “heroes” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1

Concerts cancelled
Robin’s concert in Windsor, which was to take place on July 13, has been cancelled. Also the earlier mentioned performance on July 16 still is not a confirmed show and we also doubt if that performance will ever take place. www.ticketmaster.co.uk

Stayin’ Alive re-recorded

Robin and Valeriya

Robin has re-recorded the Bee Gees disco classic Stayin’ Alive with the Russian pop star Valeriya. The song was recorded at Spirit Studios in London last month and is produced by George De Angelis Russian Valeriya wrote to the Robin last year, enclosing a copy of her cover of the 1978 classic – and Robin was so impressed with her talents, he vowed to work with the star and raise her profile in western Europe. Valeriya has sold more than 100 million albums in Eastern Europe – but she is still yet to succeed in the rest of the world. She is often called the Russian Madonna. She says, “I sent Robin a letter explaining how hard it was for us to get Western music growing up behind the iron curtain (Communist states in Eastern Europe). But I loved the Bee Gees.” Gibb says, “She’s Russia’s top artist and really good.” www.thesun.co.uk:80 Also visit: www.valeriya.co.ukwww.youtube.com and www.myspace.com.
