A story of a Bee Gees fan visiting Australia to see how Vince and Colin are doing these days. Vince was a guitarist of The Bee Gees in the early days when the group first became popular in Europe after their arriving back from Australia. Colin joined The Bee Gees in the same period of the groups’ career being the drummer of The Bee Gees. This is a report of Regina’s meeting in Australia with both Vince Melouney and Colin Petersen as well as Joanne Petersen.

Regina: ‘It was August 2003 when I once again had the need to call Vince Melouney specially because it was his birthday on August 18th.! During the call I told him that I was planning to travel again to Australia in 2004 and this time I hoped to meet him as well. Colin Petersen and Joanne I had already informed about my plans earlier. Vince hoped that would indeed be possible and wanted to meet with me in Cairns. So the first travel destination for me was known now. Joanne had already written me I should come to Byron Bay in any case that’s where I could meet both her and Colin. So I booked in August 2004 and planned to visit Cairns, Byron Bay and Sydney. I bombed Vince then with all kinds of SMS messages and phone calls in January and February because I in any case wanted to meet him as well, poor guy!!. I felt sorry for him and somehow I felt a little upset too of all this pushing and asking but to complete my travel plans I needed to know places an dates.
Vince Melouney

Now I had to make my final booking and decided to go to Cairns for 14 days, to Byron Bay for 5 days and next to that I wanted to visit Sydney for another 3 days. I wouldn’t travel with a group but on my own and although I had the help of my travel agency, planning all this was very exciting. I then mentioned Vince and Joanne my travel plans and just hoped all would go well. Shortly before my departure I received a very nice letter from Joanne telling me she was looking forward to see me in Byron Bay and Colin added some lines to the letter too about seeing each other again, great, but where was the final answer from Vince!! Sad to say I had to SMS him once again, I believe my 50th message to him!! Gladly, he wrote me back. However he couldn’t see me in Cairns but would meet me in Byron Bay, wonderful!! Finally the day of departure in Germany came closer and I was about to leave for Cairns in Australia. Those 14 days in Cairns seemed to last forever and from Cairns I phoned Joanne and she told me I wouldn’t be able to see Colin any sooner than my visit to Sydney.

Regina and Vince
However with Vince I planned to meet up in Byron Bay so while being in Cairns I couldn’t wait to go to my second destination. Byron Bay is a lovely small place with a great beach. And the people living there are so kind. Joanne was very kind and spent a lot of time with me and it felt really good to be with her and to hear so much about her life. In fact she also has written a book about her interesting life, this with the help of her son Ben and this will be released next year!! I also visited together with Joanne a very nice market in Bungalow, with again so many nice people ad lovely stands to walk along. I enjoyed my self very much. Suddenly I saw a beautiful necklace but unfortunately I’d forgotten to change enough money to be able to buy it and lucky for me Joanne lent it to me as well as some extra money for having dinner etc. Very kind of her.

I had to be sure to see her once more during this holiday so I could give back the money to her. She showed me her home, a lovely cottage and I got lots of lovely fruit from her neighbours. We had however one problem, how to reach Colin as every time we only got his voice mail when phoning and Joanne started to worry a bit as it was typical Colin not to answer right back. So I started to panic a bit and hoped that in any case our plans for meeting Colin in Sydney would be possible. Joanne thought the problem could be the old type of mobile phone Colin was using, that could be the reason for not reaching him. This had happened more often. After this wonderful Sunday with Joanne we decided to see each other again on Tuesday. She hoped for me the meeting with Vince the next day would be possible as well and asked me to phone her afterwards. She was so sweet. That next Monday morning seemed to last for ever until I heard the phone. It was Vince telling me he was on his way but would be there a bit later at the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay. I was there much too early with some small presents, photos to sign and with my camera. Finally Vince arrived and I recognized him at once. It was so nice to see him but I had been so nervous before.

Vince came with his girl friend Lisa, a very nice lady. She took care of bringing us drinks and all, so Vince and I had time enough to chat with each other. It was great to meet him and he was so nice. Suddenly they asked me if I was hungry. It was already lunch time but I hadn’t noticed before with all this talking with Vince. Lisa and Vince took me with them to his car, a huge white Jaguar, a car which suited him perfectly. He opened the car door and there was a huge pick nick basket made by Lisa for our lunch and I was very surprised! We took plaids and cool boxes and find us a nice place on the beach. I couldn’t believe to sit there having a pick nick with Vince on the beach. We had fish and salad and several kinds of bread.
I took lots of photos and enjoyed my eating fish with Vince on the beach. Vince told me he was traveling along the Gold Coast at the moment and was planning to visit Germany next year. I told him to keep him updated about the (Bee Gees) fan clubs and to inform the clubs about him, which I did right

after coming again. This way I hope it will be easier for him to get in touch with the clubs while coming over to for instance Germany. After the pick nick we went back to the car to take some more photos etc. walked a bit through Byron Bay and then said goodbye. I then walked back to the hotel. I’d had a great time!! I immediately phoned Joanne to tell her I had a great time meeting Vince and Lisa. And she was happy it had worked. When Joanne came to the hotel on Tuesday I could already show her the first photos and she took a box with her private pictures to show me of her, Colin and the kids. I could choose some photos to copy in Germany. And she also gave me a book of Byron Bay with her signature, it was so nice.!! We then decided to eat Sushi and almost forgot to take some more pictures. We still hadn’t been able to reach Colin and I started being rather nervous because that Thursday I’d to leave for my last stop: Sydney.

Colin Petersen

On Wednesday I again phoned with Joanne to thank her for everything. After having arrived in Sydney I tried to reach Colin again by phone and left my hotel number behind at his voice mail. When I arrived home that evening from a walk around Darling Harbour Joanne had already left a message. Colin finally had a new mobile phone on which I’d to call him and that’s what I did right away. I couldn’t believe I got him on the phone right away and we decided to meet on Saturday. He was with friends some 3 ½ hours from Sydney and wanted to come back to Queensland and specially for me he decided to travel back sooner as otherwise I would have left for Germany already.. So he’d be there on Saturday, very kind!! We decided to meet at the same spot like two years ago and it was so good to see him again!! We had coffee together and we watched photos. Afterwards he invited me to come with him to a Thailand restaurant.

I’d never eaten food from Thailand before so I decided Colin had to choose for me. It tasted great!! We had lots to talk about and time was flying. Before he had to leave again we took some photos at a nice spot. Colin asked two girls to take pictures of us. Well one took the photos and the other one was just looking at Colin thinking: who the hell are you, I know your face!! Suddenly she said: you look so familiar, who are you and then Colin explained to her. She was excited and both girls wanted to take photos with Colin too. Colin enjoyed all this. Such a pity, but it was time to say goodbye again to each other and I went back to the hotel. From there I phoned Joanne and Vince for the last time to say goodbye before I’d to leave for Germany again. When it was Sunday I just couldn’t believe it was all over and I really had enjoyed an unbelievable time in Australia, so on the plane back home some tears came in my eyes. I of course hope to see them all back some time again. Hopefully next year when Joanne releases her book and when Vince is planning to visit Germany of which I hope to be able to inform the fans about when he’s coming. I believe in the future and look forward to it.

Greetings from a very happy Regina’.
