The Magnetic Tour first visited Malaysia where Robin performed at the Genting Highlands Resort in Kuala Lumpur for about 2000 enthusiastic fans. Robin did 21 songs. The oldies of The Bee Gees as well as solo work like: Saved By The Bell and Juliet.

Singapore
August 23, Singapore Indoor Stadium
Robin played at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, where he performed with a 30-piece orchestra as part of his Magnetic 2005 tour. Although he did songs from his album Magnet, most of the night was devoted to songs he penned with his brothers: older sibling Barry and twin brother Maurice, who died in 2003. Robin: “Obviously we cannot be the same without Maurice, but there is no end to a great legacy.” “So we continue on … for the moment in our separate ways, but who knows?”

Among the Bee Gees, I love Robin Gibb so much. His magnetic voice has put me under his spell. Every time I heard his songs, I’m not singing along with it, I just listen and feel his magical voice deep within me. It was a wonderful night of great music. When he sang “I Started a Joke”, I knew it was him and he’s real, I’m not dreaming or something, it’s Robin Gibb in front of me singing my favorite songs. From the way he moved his feet with every beat of the sounds, the wave of his hands, and the ever famous Robin Gibb thumbs-up-signs. No doubt, it’s him. Robins version of “First of May” was really great, his powerful voice made the audience scream. When he sang “Staving Alive”, nobody can stop the crowd from dancing, it’s like a “Tuesday Night Fever”.
I’m one of those lucky fans who managed to get an autograph and took pictures of him. I hope Robin will keep his promise, bringing Barry with him and perform their Bee Gees Songs. I would like to thank Mr. Jojo San Pedro and my friend Steve O’ Neal. And of course, I would like to extend my gratitude to the GSI for making things possible for the fans to get an updated information on the Brothers Gibb.

Robin Gibb’s concert in Taipei, Taiwan is a great performance. Robin’s beautiful voice is as good as his album in 20 years ago. “I started a joke” is the best one singing by Robin, we can not believe we have the chance to listen Robin singing lively in front of us (after 20 years). I would like to say a great thanks to Robin (come to Taipei), we do have a great time in the concert. Bee Gees is always the best and forever.

Also during this concert the golden oldies brought back sweet memories and when hearing the more up-tempo songs like You Should Be Dancing and You Win Again everyone started dancing. “Staying Alive” was the last song and the set list was the same in Taipei as it was in Singapore.

Robin in Taipei
Robin’s Taipei concert took place at National Taiwan University Sports Center. Unique banners advertising the concert were flying in front of the 4,000-capacity venue, which was 90% full. The center was not originally built for concerts, so the acoustic was better in Hong Kong. Robin, smartly dressed in a yellow jacket, appeared to have trouble with high notes up until the third song, but after that, his voice was just incredible. He waved and smiled as the audience cheered, but did not speak much as the Taiwanese audience did not seem to understand much English. The concert started at 7:45 p.m. and lasted for approx. 93 minutes with two encores. The set list as written below was basically the same as in Hong Kong except for the addition of “Wish You Were Here” and some minor changes in the sequence of songs in the latter part of the show. The orchestral arrangement of “New York Mining Disaster 1941” was simplified to highlight Robin’s great vocal.

The audience’s response was great. Especially when Robin did his thumb-ups to the audience up on the second floor, the cheering was thunderous. “You Win Again seemed to be the particular favorite of the Taiwanese audience for some reason unknown to me. The dominantly over-40 audience was described in the newspaper headline of the following day as the “mature men and women”. During encores, fans rushed to the stage, with apparently very few security staff trying to stand in their way. While Robin shook hands with them from the stage, his manager Ken was seen watching from the wings with a preoccupied air. Something really scary happened during the encores, too. When everyone in the hall started dancing and stomping around, the floor started to actually shake! The hall was on the third floor of the gym building, and I knew for a fact that the floor below consisted of a swimming pool (and I can’t swim!).
What if the floor fell off? Pretty soon, local fans seated in front of me and I found ourselves shrieking “Dangerous!” In fact, even before the start of the show, there was some commotion. Some of the audience, obviously unsatisfied with the seating arrangements, were heatedly communicating their discomfort to the hall staff. They had not expected their seats to be so far back. (According to the next day’s newspaper, the most excited among the lot was a certain Mr. Lin.) Because the VIP seats were not sold at ticketrons, the seat numbers on the tickets easily misled the fans to believe that their seats were closer to the stage than they really were. However, once inside the hall, where there were rows and rows of VIP seats in front of you, you had to face the harsh reality. One of the protesting women stood up and shouted something-probably “Fraud!”-in Chinese.
It was a pity that the next day’s newspapers reporting the concert tended to focus more on this trouble than on the wonderful performance of Robin. According to the local newspaper, Robin stayed in a designer suite which cost 68,000 Taiwan dollars per night. My own accommodation in Taipei was naturally more humble, but I met Robin at his hotel when he came back to it after the concert. He cordially stopped to record a message for Japanese fans and, despite the fact that he’d just been through an hour and a half’s singing, which must have been a tiring experience to say the least, was in great shape and spirits.

Robin in Seoul
Robin’s concert in Seoul was held at COEX Convention Hall. Just like the venue in Hong Kong, it is located in a complex with adjoining hotels and conference rooms, and is also connected to a huge underground shopping mall. The posters advertising Robin’s concert were everywhere in the ground floor of the complex and the mall. There was also a huge signboard. Their scarlet color stood out nicely. Robin and his entourage were staying at one of the adjoining hotels. When I arrived at the hotel late on August 30th, the band members and some of the staff, seven or eight people in all, were just going out in taxis. I hope they enjoyed their evening out in Seoul. The following day also saw some of the members and managers relaxing at the hotel and the shopping mall. August 31st, the day of the concert, came. The sound check started in the afternoon at the venue. We could hear it going on behind closed doors. When Robin joined the others at a little past four in the afternoon, we heard him singing “Holiday”. The song had not been in the set list in his previous Asian dates. It must have been added because of its exceptional popularity in Korea. At a little past eight in the evening, the concert started on time. The huge hall was full of chairs and packed with an audience of all ages from youths to parents with small children. When the orchestra started playing the intro to “Emotion” and Robin walked onto the stage in a yellow jacket, the audience went wild cheering and clapping.

Robin replaced “Wish You Were Here” performed in other Asian cities with “Holiday”. Also, “Jive Talkin'” was moved up to the beginning of the encore. This was the first Bee Gee concert in Seoul. So, the audience’s response was simply fabulous. Great cheers went up for each and every song. There was a woman in the front row who kept on dancing fervently and blissfully from before the encore up until the last. During the encores, quite a few people rushed to the stage. Robin kept on singing in the middle of all the excitement. Two big Korean fans who were seated beside me were enjoying themselves immensely. I was also having the time of my life, of course. Ten days had already passed since Robin kicked off the second part of the Asian Tour in Kuala Lumpur. After the concert, I asked Robin back at the hotel if he was tired, and he cheerfully replied, “Not at all!” Early next morning I ran into Errol Reid, who sang backup vocals, at the breakfast buffet of the hotel. Before we went our separate ways, we promised to meet again in Tokyo.
